What is the weather like in Peru?

At the end of October, the weather around Lake Titicaca, Peru, is generally cool and dry. Expect daytime temperatures around 15-20°C (59-68°F), while nighttime temperatures can drop significantly to 1-5°C (34-41°F) due to the high altitude (over 3,800 meters or 12,500 feet above sea level). Mornings and evenings can be quite chilly, so layering is recommended. While October is still relatively dry, occasional rain showers may begin to appear as the wet season approaches.

How do I manage the altitude in Peru?

We recommend prioritizing proper acclimatization to minimize the effects of altitude sickness.  To manage the high altitude at Titilaka, focus on gradual ascent, staying hydrated, eating small meals, avoiding strenuous activity on arrival, considering altitude medication if necessary, and consulting with your doctor before your trip.

Key strategies:

  • Gradual Ascent: Plan your itinerary to ascend slowly over a few days, allowing your body to adjust to the higher altitude gradually.

  • Hydration: Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don't feel thirsty, as dehydration can exacerbate altitude sickness symptoms.

  • Small Meals: Eat smaller, lighter meals more frequently, opting for easily digestible foods like soups and carbohydrates.

  • Rest Days: Schedule rest days to allow your body time to acclimatize properly.

  • Altitude Medication: Consult your doctor about taking medication like acetazolamide (Diamox) to help with altitude adaptation, but only use it as advised.

  • Avoid Strenuous Activity: Limit intense physical activity on the first few days at high altitude.

  • Coca Tea: Consider drinking coca tea, a traditional remedy in the region that can help with altitude sickness.

What is an altar offering?

During The Retreatment, we invite you to bring an object that holds meaning for you.  We will create a space at the front of our practice room for you to place this object. It could be a photo, a piece of art, jewelry, a letter—anything. We suggest that you think about this ahead of time. Begin the process of envisioning what you are stepping into this week and how this offering can support your journey.
